How much NZH hosts can earn
New Zealand Homestay operates in a number of regions on the North and South Islands. Each location has host reimbursement rates specific to the living costs and services available in that region. Host reimbursement rates include the use of internet, laundry facilities and utilities (e.g. power, water). All hosts who successfully complete the host certification process to accept NZH guests are automatically covered under our insurance policy. Please click here to view our rates.
The Process
If you answer “Yes” to these simple questions, you should apply to be an NZH host:
- Do you have a spare room?
- Do you live near public transport?
- Would you be a good mentor for a new visitor to New Zealand?
Once you’ve answered those questions, it’s time to start the process!
Hosting with NZH is easy. Just complete these simple steps:
- Submit our one page application form.
- Complete your NZH profile. Host profiles are used to match the best students to your home/ family.
- One of our friendly local staff will conduct interviews and a house inspection. Police vetting is also necessary for safety and security purposes. The primary host will also need to undergo a reference check.
- You’re ready to host!

Hosting is EASY
NZH hosts provide a clean and furnished bedroom for their guest. This includes items like a bed, desk, wardrobe, chair and a study lamp. The visiting student will need to have access to bathroom and laundry facilities and hosts can choose a range of NZH options in regard to meal inclusions.
Create memorable experiences
Enjoying everyday activities with your visiting student, like:
- showing your student around your community
- guiding them on the basics of New Zealand culture
- teaching them some basics like organising a phone, buying public transport tickets, where the local shops are, how to access banking and personal safety tips
- take part in everyday conversation and teach ‘Kiwi’ words and phrases
- visiting local attractions, parks and restaurants
Learn New Cultures
One of the great experiences offered through hosting an international student is learning about another culture as you get to share your own. Students will share their traditions, meals, and beliefs with you, and it is expected that you will include them in yours.

Many students stay in touch with their host families long after they have finished their study. We’ve even had host parents visit students they have hosted in their home country.
When you apply as a host, it costs you absolutely nothing, and there is no obligation on your behalf to accept a student when offered.
